: I don't know if Kwan is a common surname or not, but I sure know that Kwan is a very famous surname in chinese history.
: I was wonder have you read the Romance of the Three Kingdoms?? c.221 A.D.
: There is mentioned in that book about a Kwan general and his family. Infact he is so famous that people worship him. If you ever see a status with a red faced man, long beard and holding a big long cresent spear..errrr...don't know the name for english but in japanese it is Niagata. Then it is him.
: Romance of the three kingdoms is a great book about chinese history and to get an idea of the surnames that was around then, but tracing your ancestors is going to be very hard, because back then they didn't have birth certificates.
Unfortunately none of the present day Kwans are related to him because at the fall of the Szechuan Han dynasty (kingdom) all his ofsprings were killed by the son of the last general he killed in battle.
Here is a trivia for you. He is not only the patron saint of the police but also the patron saint of thieves.
