'Hom' is the Taishanese pronunciation of the above surname. In Mandarin it is pronounced 'tan2' and in Cantonese it is pronounced 'taam4'. If your grandfather pronounced it 'Hom', he most likely came from the area in and around Taishan City in Guangdong (Canton) province.
