You did not identify the origin of the surname Ly. I suspect it is of Vietnamese origin. It is pronounced Lee in Cantonese or Li in Mandarin which means "plum". Lai is also pronounced Li in Mandarin, but is a different surname.

: Hi there all, I see that quite a few of you know a bit about chinese geneology so I was wondering if anyone could tell me about my surname, "Ly". Also, how would you pronounce it? It seems in my parts, it's "Lai" (confusing since Lai is also a popular name) whereas the "Lee" sound is pretty much reserved for those with names, Li and Lee. So anything?
