Do you have the character? You could look it up on www.zhongwen.com or a few other sites. With the various dialects and romanization it's often times very difficult. Once you find out what character it is and it's pronounciation in Mandarin and Cantonese you can post a question on www.asiawind.com. One of the contributors, Chung Yoon Ngan wrote a book on the history of Chinese surnames.

Offhand your name could be the Sei Yap (area in Canton) pronounciation of Deng (M) or Tang (Cantonese). In the US, the more common spelling for this last name from Sei Yap is Ong.
