The character you have written is a Chinese surname, pronounced "zhan" (first tone) in mandarin Chinese ("zhan" in Pinyin romanization, "chan" in Wade-Giles). In Cantonese it is pronounced "jim" (high level tone), which is likely how it would have been pronounced in Hainan.
The bottom part of the character you've written is in cursive script. Good luck.
