If it's any help, my surname is Hew and it is written with the character 'hill', pronounced 'yau' in Cantonese. It is character 077.140 in the Kangxi dictionary.
: www.chineseroots.com now has an expanded English secvion where you can enter the names to search for Chinese surnames in most dialects and spellings. Chin produced many surnames but unfortunately Hew did not. You must still know the written Chinese character for the surname to pick a selection. Do you know what dialect Hew is or the Chinese character?
