Theoretically, people with the same Chinese Surname are related through their paternal ancestors. However, some of the more popular names came from emporers of some dynasties who bestow their own surnames to their favarite followers. These may include surnames such as Lee, Chu, and Liu. This may not be the case of Lin, but I am not familiar with the origin of taht name.
