As I do not know what part of the world you are located, I will comment in aq a general way
When the information says a person was born in Canton, it usually meant in the vicinity of Canton since Canton is the largest ane best known city in the region. In all likelihood your gggrandfather was born in that region. To further your research, you should try to pinpoint the name of the village and the name of the county. This will narrow your search. Each village usually has a RECORD of the inhabitants and usually the record books of individual surnames. These records are kept for a long time many hundreds of years. They are kept up to date by the village elders and pass on from generation to generations. All births are recorded in this manner. Unfortunately in the Chines culture only the male line was recored. If for some reason the village is gone some of these records are available in the libraries in Canton or the principal city of the county.
If you can find relatives with surname Cheong, they may give you spme leads. Since he was born in 1834, he possibly migrated to other parts of the world, most likely to North or South Amertica, or to Sothwest Asia in the countries of the vast region of Malaysia and Indonisia, Thailand regions.
If you knpow the Chinese character of the surname Cheong, Try contacting the Cheong FAmily organizations in major cities.
