Biography* The following was preserved by Mrs. Eleanor (Culpepper) Willingham: Life of Sally Bowen Sally Bowen was born in La Grange, Georgia, on April 3, 1926, to Julia Culpepper Bowen and Alval Manly Bowen, Sr. Her father was an educator. She moved to Newnan, Georgia, in 1929, where she was educated in the Newnan public schools and graduated from Newnan High School in 1943. She received an A.B. Degree from Wesleyan College, a Master of Arts in Teaching Degree from Duke University, and a Specialist in Education Degree from West Georgia College. Sally taught for forty-five years, retiring in 19922. She taught at Atkinson Elementary School in Newnan, Newnan High School, Oak Mountain Academy in Carrollton, The Heritage School in Newnan, and the J. C. Booth Middle School in Peachtree City. Her subjects were Latin and social studies. She was Teacher of the Year for Newnan public schools, Teacher of the Year for the congressional district, Star Teacher three times at the Heritage School, and most outstanding teacher of Latin in Georgia. She received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Georgia Association of Independent Schools. She served as president of the Newnan Education Association and as chairman of the Classical-Modern Language Association for the congressional district. She is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society of key women teachers. The Key Club of Newnan High School gave her an award for outstanding service to Newnan High School. Sally has served as a Girl Scout troop leader. She has been on the boards of directors of the Newnan Youth Center, the Newnan-Coweta Y.M.C.A., the Newnan Music Festival, the Coweta chapter of the American Red Cross, the Newnan Pilot Club, the Newnan Ladies Golf Association, Humana Hospital, the Newnan-Coweta Public Library, and the Newnan Parks Commission. For the city of Newnan she has been on the Citizens Advisory Committee the bicentennial committee, and the sesquicentennial committee. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Heritage School and a member of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce. Wesleyan College gave her an award for distinguished achievement. She has been the Citizen of the Year for Coweta County, the Woman of the Year for Coweta County, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a deacon and an elder in the Newnan Presbyterian Church. Sally is single. She has a brother, Alva Manly Bowen, Jr., of Annapolis, Maryland. Mrs. Eleanor (Culpepper) Willingham sent the following from the Newnan Times-Herald For 16 Nov 1994: Bowen presented with City of Newnan flag Long-time Newnan resident Sally Bowen, right, accepts her own City of Newnan flag from Mayor Keith Brady during the city council meeting last Tuesday. Last year, Bowen suggested that the council adopt a city flag. "I thank you for being responsive to an ordinary citizen," she said after being presented with the flag. "I think it is wonderful that an humbled citizen like me is listened to. I shall treasure it always." A limited number of flags designed by City Manager Richard Bolin, will be available for sale to the public. Miss Sally Bowen, a long-time resident of Newnan, was named the Senior Presbyterian of the Year at a banquet held at the Peachtree Presbyterian Church on Jan. 26. The Presbytery of Greater Atlanta, which consists of 112 churches and about 50,000 Presbyterians, honors one of its senior members each year. The winner is chosen on the basis of his contributions to the community as well as the church. Bowen has been an active member of Newnan Presbyterian Church for 62 years. During that time she has continually served the church, as an officer on the diaconate, on the session and as a teacher, and member of the Presbyterian Women. She was the first female elected deacon and elder of the Presbyterian Church in Newnan. Bowen, a native of LaGrange, moved to Newnan at age three when her father became principal of Newnan High School. Her mother, a Lutheran, and her father, a Baptist, compromised and attended the Newnan Presbyterian Church. Their daughter joined the church at age seven after the pastor interviewed her and deemed her spiritually ready for membership. After graduating from Wesleyan College, Bowen returned to Newnan and became an active church member. She volunteered as youth director for many years. Since 1947, she has faithfully attended the Ysabel Odom Sunday School Class and the meetings of the Presbyterian Women. In 1969, she accepted the office of deacon with two other women, the first female deacons of the church. In 1973, she became the first female elder. Currently; Bowen is serving on the session, serving as chair of the education ministry. She has lead many committees, particularly the worship and education committees. Bowen was a session member when the church started the preschool as a successful outreach into the community. Each fall new members benefit from hearing her teach the survey class on "What Presbyterians Believe About The Bible." As a member of the Newnan Presbyterian Session, she has eagerly participated in the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. She has served as a committee member and has attended Presbytery of Greater Atlanta meetings. An officer of the Southwest Cluster, she debated and voted on important issues that have affected the Presbyterian Church at the national level. Two of these votes were for the unification of the churches in the North and South, and whether children could take communion. Later, she served communion at the Omni in Atlanta to celebrate the unification of the church, an event which she describes as a "mountain top experience." Perhaps even more significant to her was her election as a commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. Besides being an active church member, Bowen served area schools primarily as a Latin teacher for 45 years. Strict and demanding in the classroom, she particularly enjoyed her relationships with students in extracurricular activities, such as cheer leading. The retired educator has maintained relationships with many of her students. She received many professional honors during her teaching career. The Newnan Schools honored her as Teacher of the Year, and she was the Heritage School STAR Teacher three times. The Fourth Congressional District voted her District Teacher of the Year, and the Foreign Language Teachers of Georgia chose her as Latin Teacher of the Year. Even though Bowen was a devoted teacher, she still was actively involved in the community. She was a member of the Red Cross and YMCA Boards as well as the National Bicentennial Committee, the Newnan Sesquicentennial Committee and the local parks and recreation committee. She served on the Citizens Advisory Committee, which oversaw the equal distribution of federal funds to citizens of all races in Coweta County. For many years she has been an active member of the board of the Newnan-Coweta County Public Library. She was involved with this board during the construction of the new building, the first cooperative effort of this kind between the City of Newnan and Coweta County. Bowen also currently is a member of the Development Council of Newnan Hospital. Beside promoting the hospital, the board is committed to working out solutions to the problem of teenage pregnancy in Coweta County, which has the highest rate in the state. In addition, as an executive committee member of the new Wesley Woods of Newnan/Peachtree City, she is dedicated to providing "graceful" living for the elderly in the area. This month Bowen begins her term as a trustee of the Georgia Council on Moral and Civic Concerns, an interdenominational group. Bowen is often asked to speak in the community. She was on the program for the World War II victory celebration at Newnan High School earlier last year. She has often spoken about Lewis Grizzard, one of her favorite Latin students. Bowen persuaded the Newnan City Council of Newnan to adopt a city flag and Mayor Keith Brady presented her with a flag as Newnan's "first citizen."
Carol Flannigan wrote the nomination of Bowen as Senior Presbyterian of the Year on behalf of the church. "As a soldier in God's army, Miss Sally Bowen has met life's challenges and used them as opportunities to make a difference in the Presbyterian Church and the city. she has encouraged the community to grow spiritually, socially and intellectually," Flannigan wrote. Bowen was pleasantly surprised when the received the honor on Jan. 26, since she was not aware she had been nominated. A number of friends from the church and community were present for the ceremonies. Others nominated this year for Senior Presbyterian of the Year were Howard and Margaret Montgomery, Central Presbyterian; Susan Daugherty, First Presbyterian of Atlanta; Dr. Flora Davis, Radcliffe Presbyterian; Dr. Robert Hall Gillespie, Rock Springs Presbyterian; Annie Mae Funderburk, Roswell Presbyterian; and Lona Bellah Bennett, Stockbridge Presbyterian.
