Research by Don Guehrn confims that William J. McDonald, Jr.; the son of the marriage of William J. McDonald, Sr. and Caro Lina Gould; was the driver in a bank robbery of the Farmers Savings Bank of North English, Iowa on 16 Jun 1938. $904.00 was stollen in the robbery and Louis Bury and Richard Ringler of Victor, Iowa were the robbers. Miss Opal Wymore was the bank cashier they took the money from. William J. McDonald, Jr. was driving a black Dodge sedan, with license number 48-3976. They were not caught, until they tried to rob another bank in Sigourney, Iowa later that year. They were all convicted and sent to prison, including William J. McDonald, Jr.'s first wife, Norma Morgan.
