The Seay and Jacob Fudge families were living at Abingdon, VA. Heard of the rich lands west of the Mississippi River being opened up for settlement.

In the winter of 1844, instead of staring on the long tedious journey by ox cart as many were doing, they cut timber and procured luber and built a houseboat.

When all was ready, a party of fifteen started west. Included were - Grandfather & Grandmother Seay, their children: John, Warren, Jesse, Rebecca, Mary and Eliza. Polly the wife of Warren, Jesse the son of Polly and Warren, Jacob Fudge the husband of Rebecca, and a friend whose name is not known.

The family brought some money , a cow and such simple household articles as were necessary. They traveled only days, stopping at night so that the cow could feed on the abundant growth of grass along the river.

They sailed down the Holstein River into the Tennessee River. On the their trip through the Tennessee River they passed through Mussle Shoals long before Henry Ford was born and they had to get a special pilot to take them through. From the Tennessee they headed into the Ohio River to the Mississippi River. There they sold the houseboat and took passage on a steamer to Burlington, IA.

At Burlington they engaged men with ox teams to take them to Tools Point (not Monroe), Jasper Co., IA. They took homesteads north of Tools Point and began to make a home (June 1, 1844). The weather was pleasant and they lived under the stars in the woods while all hands felled trees and hewed them flat and notched them for the corners of their houses. The logs were held in place by wooden pegs. For the roof, some used coarse slough grass for thatch but most of them use clpaboards (made by splitting logs as thin as possible with a broadax).

At first the houses all had dirt floors. They had no stoves but built fireplaces and chimneys of poles and plastered them heavily inside and out with yellow clay. These fireplaces were built deep and four or five feet long so that they could burn limbs of trees and even logs twelve to eighteen inches in diameter.
