Rachel Alice KRUSE, a great-granddaughter of Joseph Frederick LANGLAS and Kastena Lena WENDELL, proclaims there is or was a LANGLAS CEMETERY in a small fenced area 4 or 5 miles southeast of Marengo or 3 or 4 miles northeast of Williamsburg, Iowa. She says it is on a privately owned farm along Highway 6 and the cemetery may be listed as an Historical Site with the State of Iowa and the Williamsburg Historical Society. She also claims her father, George J. KRUSE, erected an iron fence around it. Personal research and walking of the cemetery has determined what she was referring to is now called The Old Marengo Cemetery and a sign on the gate indicates it has been renamed the Pioneer Cemetery. In turn, it has been proven beyond a doubt that Joseph Frederick LANGLAS and his wife, Kastena Lena WENDELL were buried in the Genoa Bluffs Cemetery, located south of Ladora, Iowa, very near the south side of Interstate Highway 80. Rachel's paternal great-grandparents, Joachim and Anna (Stoltenberg) Kruse were buried in the Old Marengo (now a Pioneer) Cemetery.

** Quoted from the Pardridge/Partridge Family File found on RootsWeb.com and last updated Monday, 26 May 2003 by Elizabeth Edwards (ce27337@earthlink.com).It appears that the move of the Langlas family from Scott Co., IA to Sumner Twp., Iowa Co, IA may have been related to the fact their eldest son, William and his 2nd wife, Wilhelmina "Minnie" Ida GUEHRN, had relocated to Sumner Twp. in Iowa Co.
In the 1800s, the proper name for Mecklenburg was Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Today, at the beginning of the 21st Century, the region is part of the German Bundesland (state) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is in the northeastern corner of Germany, north of Berlin on the coast of the North Sea. In the 1850s Mecklenburg had the third highest emigration rate in Europe. [The Langlas family emigrated from Germany in 1859 and were at sea during October of that year, as reflected by the birth of their daughter, Madalena Dora Chrstina LANGLAS, on 28 Oct 1859.]
By the Treaty of Hamburg (1701), most of Mecklenburg territory went to Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The Congress of Viena in 1814-1815 recognized it as a Grand Duchy.
Areas: Mecklenburg Schwerin, Mecklenburg Srelitz, the state if Mecklenburg, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. This includes the portions of the former Pomerania that are west of the Oder River and are known as Vorpommern. Mecklenburg-West Pomerania is, today, a state in northeastern Germany, bounded on the north by the Baltic Sea, on the west by Schleswig-Holstein, on the southwest by Lower Saxony, on the south by Brandenburg, and on the east by Poland. Teutonic peoples inhabited the area in the first centuries of the Christian era, but early in the 6th century, it was seized by various Slavic tribes.
The Mecklenburg region was conquered by Henry the Lion in the latter half of the 12th century. In 1348, it was elevated to a duchy. The duchy was subdivided in 1621 into the duchies of Mecklenburg Schwerin and Mecklenburg Strelitz, both of which were elevated to grand duchies in 1815. They joined the German Empire in 1871 and, after World War I, were made states of the new German Republic. In 1934, they were united into the state of Mecklenburg. After World War II, Mecklenburg became part of the Soviet Union.
Pomerania, was that land in northeast Germany, along the Baltic Sea, from Mecklenburgon the west to almost Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) on the east. Pomerania was partitioned into two areas, separated by the Oder River. In 1181, it became a duchy of the German Empire, and then, in 1637 it became part of thr Prussian Empire, although the western part (Vorpommern) was under the control of Sweden until 1815. Following Wrld War II, the area east of the Oder River was given to Poland, while the area west of the Oder River was included in the new state of Mecklenburg, East Germany.
The state of Mecklenburg was dissolved in 1952, when East Germany was reorganized into districts. In 1990, with Germany's unification, the State of Mecklenburg West Pomerania (Mecklenburg Vorpommern) was created. ("Mecklenburg-West Pomerania," Microsoft Encarta.
