Immigration: 1852, Buffalo, Erie, New York. In 1852, Margaretha, her husband Jacob and family, came to America with her father, brother, and some friends. After arriving, they lived in Buffalo, New York, and while there a daughter was born to them, Rosa Fredricka.
After moving to Balltown, Iowa in 1854, three more children were born.
They later moved to Sumner township, Iowa county, Iowa in the fall of 1862. From here they spent the rest of their lives and were charter members of the St. Paul's Evangelical Church of Christ.

Immigration: 1852, New York, , New York. 10 Jacob and family were members of a group of emigrants led by Theodore Gahring in 1852. He led a group of emigrants from their homes in Harshiem, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, to the promises of America. Among this group, were his daughter, Anna Elizabetha Margaretha Gahring Schafbuch and her husband Jacob Schafbuch and their three children John Gottlieb, Jacob, Jr. and Anna Margaret., and Theodore's son John Melchoir Gahring, and John's friend Conrad Nietze and his family.
Upon their arrival in America, their first choice for a home was in Buffalo, New York.
In 1854, the Schafbuch and Gahring families pulled up stakes, and proceeded to move west. West, with the promises of cheap, rich farmlands, they located to Balltown, Jefferson township, Dubuque county, Iowa. They farmed near Balltown until 1862, when Jacob Schafbuch moved his family to Genoa Bluffs, Sumner township, Iowa county, Iowa.
The Schafbuch and Gahring families grew and prospered in Iowa county. In time Jacob Schafbuch's brothers, Gottlieb and Johannes, joined their brother in the same area. Gottlieb settled in Sumner township, and Johannes settled in the Blairstown area.
Jacob and Margaretha Schafbuch, along with John and Sophia Gahring, spent the rest of their lives in Sumner township, Iowa county, Iowa, as have many of their descendants to this day.

They were charter members of St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed church (now Trinity United Church of Christ) and their original homestead was located west of the church. There they raised their six surviving children (they lost two infants).
