1. Theodore GAHRING 1 was born in 1796 in Harsheim, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany and died in 1869 in Iowa at age 73. Ancestral File Number: 22QL-PVX.

Death Notes: Died between Dubuque & Davenport,IA

Burial Notes: Buried by the Mississippi river somewherebetween Debuque and Davenport, IA

General Notes: EMMIGATION: After being widowed for several years, in 1852, Theodore led a group of emmigrants from their homes in Harshiem, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, to the promises of America. Among this group, were his daughter, Anna Elizabetha Margaretha Gahring Schafbuch, and her husband, Jacob Schafbuch and their family, Theodore's son, John Melchoir Gahring, and John's friend, Conrad Nietze and his family.
Upon their arrival in America, their first choice for a home was in Buffalo, New York. It was there that Conrad Nietze, and an infant son, died. On his deathbed, Conrad bade his friend John Gahring, to care for his young wife and young daughter. John promised him he would, and John kept that promise -- he later wed the widowed Augusta Sophia Charlotte Nietze.
In 1854, the Gahring and Schafbuch families pulled up stakes, and proceeded to move west. West, with the promises of cheap, rich farmlands, they located to Balltown, Jefferson township, Debuque county, Iowa. They farmed near Balltown until 1862, when Jacob Schafbuch moved his family to Genoa Bluffs, Sumner township, Iowa county, Iowa. In 1869, John Gahring also decided to move his family to Sumner township. During the first leg of their journey though, between Debuque and Davenport, Theodore Gahring died, and was buried by the Mississippi river.
The Schafbuch and Gahring families grew and prospered in Iowa county. In time Jacob Schafbuch's brothers, Gottlieb and Johannes, joined their brother in the same area. Gottlieb settled in Sumner township, and Johannes settled in the Blairstown area.
Jacob and Margaretha Schafbuch, along with John and Sophia Gahring, spent the rest of their lives in Sumner township, Iowa county, Iowa, as have many of their descendants to this day.
