Bowen-Green family
Fri, 29 Aug 2003
From: Steven R Page
Your Bowen-Green connections caught my eye as I have been following a Hugh Bowen who settled in Bowens Prairie (his namesake), Iowa and moved to Colorado. It was said he is a lifelong bachelor but appears had a child out of wedlock named after him who died 1942 in Missouri (have obit). The mother of the child is a Paulina Sheffield. she married a Joseph E. Green in 1839. He died in 1851 and she then remarried in 1857 to a John Adams.
I know Joseph Green was a pioneer settler in Jones County, Iowa and was there by 1840 but don't know where he came from. At the same time Hugh Bowen is credited as being the first white man to set foot there in 1836.
Can you connect and have info on this Joseph Green and Hugh Bowen?
If you can help Steven, please contact him Steven R Page

I am a descendant of the English Sea Capt. George Bowen who m. Mary Margaret Farr (Mary For on marriage cert.) both died in Charleston; yellow fever. The only surviving child, George, was taken in by Orsamus Allan Brown, a good friend of the father, and took him to the West Indies to raise. Later he returned and married Maria Tabitha Conant. They had a home in Laurens Cty, SC, later in Mississippi, at one time plantations at both.
I have most of the line, EXCEPT who the parents were of the English Sea Captain (George Bowen).
I don't know what line I fit into but there are many Bowen in this area and within a 60 mile radius, Anderson, Pickens, Abbeville, etc.A Bowen referred me here to look and I am enjoying reading the wonderful work each of you have done. There do not seem to be any Bowen books around here, although George Bowen, the son, has much in the Archives in Columbia, S.C. I have copies of some, but not all of his letters. I wonder if you have ever heard of my George. Perhaps he had a double name, but if so, I am not aware of it.
George Bowen b. 12-9-1784 Charleston,S.C.
d. Jan 09, 1859 "Millwood", Chickasaw Cty, Miss. Maria Tabitha Conant b. 9-23-1792 d. 8-24-1848, both bu. Miss.
Married March 8, 1810 S.C. by Rev. Mr. Mitchell. Their children:Matthew Irvin Keith Bowen
Maria Bowen
Louisa Bowen
Charles O'Neale Bowen
Richard Cunningham Bowen
Orsamus Allan Bowen
Arianna Bird Bowen
Antionette W. Bowen
George Washington Bowen, I
Mary Elizabeth Bowen
Harriet Maverick Bowen
I meant to mention that the Bowen family in Abbeville Cty is that of Thomas Jones Bowen, his son John Wesley Bowen b. 9-20-1845.
Wesley was active at 93, fed his mule "Hat" at four each morning. One September morning "Hat" accidentally kicked him, causing his death. Wesley did not leave wealth in money but in children and generations that have followed. He left a great heritage - to live a clean life and till from the soil your daily bread."Source: History of Abbeville County, SC, submitted by Mrs. C. Henry Branyon.

Can you help me? Do I need to join the Bowen clan?
Thank you very much for sharing.

I am a descendant of William Bowen and Mary Henley Bowen through their son, William Russell Bowen and his daughter Mary Henley Russell Bowen, who married John Jennett King, in Tennessee in 1833.
William Russell Bowen came to Texas in 1835, and settled in Montgomery County Texas, from Tennessee, with known sons Adam and John. John Jennett King and Mary Henley Russell Bowen King followed in 1837, and also settled in Montgomery County.
My great grand father, William Bowen King was the son of that marriage. Would like to hear more about the Texas Bowens. Have some land papers about Adam, nothing about John. Thanksfor any information about this Great American (Welsh) family.

Looking for Clara C. and Charles Goodman Bowen
Rebecca Collins is trying to locate descendants of Clara C. (Cook?) Bowen and Charles Goodman Bowen.
They are possibly of Richland County Illinois and may have been in North Carolina or have had family in North Carolina, possibly Rockingham County. They were married in Richland County Illinois on 3-11-1895.
About 12 years ago, In Rockingham County North Carolina, Mrs. Collins purchased some items with the name Clara C. Bowen stenciled on them, the items can be identified as being manufactured around the date of this marriage and are items usually associated with a marriage. Mrs Collins is interested in seeing these items get back into the hands of descendants of Clara C. Subject: Army Casualty Office looking for Mary Ann Bowen
To Bowen researcher: We are looking for:
Mary Ann Bowen (father Benjamin A. Bowen) who marr. Darius Stanley in 1871, Tioga Co.., PA and had children: Nettie, 1881; Eva, 1885; Herman, 1872, Willie P., 1875.
We found 2 Benjamin Bowen families. One in Tioga Co., Benjamin and Hannah with a Mary b. 1836 and another Benjamin and Charlotte with a Mary born about 1854. Our Mary states she was born in Feb 1847. We are hoping the Mary born 1854 is actually the one we are looking for.
Benj and Charlotte had a son Charles who marr. a Lucy A.
Charles and Lucy had a son Milton E. who marr a Lena M.
We found your site by tracking the male Bowen line.
We have gone back 4 generations in an attempt to find DNA donors. The Korean War MIA is Morris Frederick Dibble. Mary Ann Bowen would be his ggrandmother.
Benjamin's son Dorman was where we made the connection with your Bowen line not Charles, another son of this couple.
Update on this family. 6-22-03
We have found the parents of Mary Ann Bowen. Now we need the maiden name of her mother since she apparently had no sisters:
Hornelsville, Steuben, NY, 1860c:

I'm trying to get to the bottom of a family 'claim' and hope you can help. I cannot find any family tree of the Hardin clan; My father has come upon inconclusive 'evidence' that suggests that his grandmother, one Mary C. Hardin (Hardin is maiden name; Married name is Diaz, she died in the '80s in San Antonio area) was either a cousin or sister of John's.
From my great-grandmother Mary came my grandfather Frances "Frank" Diaz (He married Doris Zamora; Frank died in 1996, Doris followed in 2001; Both died in San Antonio); From them came aunts Helen (Galindo), Janet (Galindo), LouAnn (Ramos) and my father Robert (Married my mother Jill Groen in 1964), all born in the San Antonio area.
Do these leads pop up in the Hardin tree at all? Does Mary Hardin (Diaz) appear anywhere in the tree: Before, during or after? If you could help, I'd be grateful and would suply any further data you'd need if this matched up. Thank you very much.

Hello, I've run across some previously unknown Smiths buried in the Choate Cemetery in Putnam County, TN near Cookeville that seem to be connected to our Bowen's.
I descend from John Bowen through Agnes (Bowen) McFerrin-Buchanan, who married 1st John McFerrin, and 2nd Archibald Buchanan. Their daughter Martha Buchanan married about 1778 in Augusta County, VA to Andrew STEELE, and they are my maternal grandmother's direct ancestors. Agnes was a sister to William Bowen of Sumner County, TN, who's house still stands at Moss-Wright Park in Goodlettsville.
I've run across a William Smith buried at Choate who's a descendant of a George W. Smith who married a Rebecca Bowen born about 1768 in Augusta County, VA. The name "Reece Bowen Smith" pops up in this family. I'm wondering if perhaps this Rebecca was a daughter of Reece Bowen who died at King's Mountain 7 October 1780?
Thanks,
Will Smith of Hillsboro, TN.

Ben,
I am Barbara Bowen Railsback. I have struggled with finding information on my father's line for quite some time. I believe I have overcome the hitch in my story, but still I am not sure, it is just a gut thing. My problem is my grandfather, Gross Herbert Bowen, was orphaned at an early age so his knowledge of his family was limited. I am hoping that you maybe some help in helping me firm this "gut feeling" up. I have always heard that we were related to the "Big Bowen's" of El Campo. I am going to start with what I do know.
1. William Francis Bowen, b. April 17, 1870 in Texas, d. Sept. 22, 1915 Near Waco, Mc Lennan Co, TX, buried: Oakwood Cemetery, Waco TX.
married Ella Nora Gast, abt. 1900 in McLennan Co, TX, she was born, June 6, 1875 in Alabama, d: Sept. 23, 1906, Hamlin, Jones Co, TX, buried in Hamlin East Cemetery, Hamlin TX. They had three sons.
James Major Bowen, b. January 12, 1901, d. Aug. 9, 1929, Houston, Harris Co. TX
Gross Herbert Bowen, b. June 17, 1903, Hamlin, Jones Co. TX, d. April 30, 1958 Houston, Harris Co. TX
Vance Evans Bowen, b. October 28, 1906, Hamlin, Jones Co, TX, d. Sept. 29, 1985, Montgomery Co, TX
Gross Herbert Bowen and Annie Pauline Millard Bowen had 2 children, Francis Evans Bowen, Doris Elaine Bowen
What my gut is saying to me is that William Francis Bowen's father and mother were William R. Bowen and Frances Jane Scruggs. That they married in Huntsville Texas. The G. F. Scruggs and the W. R. Bowens are in the 1870 Walker Co. TX census living next door to each other. Listed with the Bowen's are 2 sons, James R. and William (4 months old, the right age and birth month). In the 1860 & 1850 Walker Co. census' William R. is listed on the census with Adam R. Bowen and wife Trucilla.
In the 1880 Walker Co TX census, I found Frances J. Bowen living now on the same property, separate house, with her father Gross F. Scruggs. Still with her 2 sons James and William, and now she is listed as divorced.
The Scruggs/Bowen family later move to Dallas and appear in Dallas Directories as either working for Scruggs or living with F. J. Bowen (the two boys). F. J. Bowen is now listed in the Directory as being the widow of W. R. Bowen.
I have located a lot of information on Adam R. Bowen and his ancestors but I need to try and tie this together more firmly. I was hoping that you might have heard about this branch of the Bowen tree. I seem to be the only person researching this family. From what I have gathered from census info. My grandfather's brothers lived with James Bowen and his wife Fannie in 1920. (the story always was that the boys went to live their father's brother after he was killed, but the uncle never was given a name until I found them in the 1920 census) I discovered from the 1910 census that James and Fannie had 3 children, but all had died. So it is likely that he has no descendents, my grandfather's brother James died with no children, and Vance had a daughter, but she isn't interested in genealogy.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I really loved your site on the net. It has given me hope that I will solve this mystery I have been trying to solve for years and years.
Yours sincerely,
Barbara Bowen Railsback

I have been to Knoxville, and Nashville and search Genealogy as well as Archives. I know they are somehow related to the "Bowens of TN and VA' and at the "King's Mountain Men" I have gone through Ms Aults two books. I have a cousin in IN who is trying one brother he is convinced is father. But I do not think he is right. I have seen several parents names that people relate as theirs but cannot find proof to prove.
I am note interested in tons of names, but names that I can prove to be family. We have spent almost two years searching, but am getting nowhere. Perhaps you can shed some light or direction that we might have missed.

It is believed that George was born in Smith County, however no documents to substantiate this.
George and Emily were married in 1869 and had 10 children:
**Samuel Hill Bowen b. 1869; married a Sarah Robinson
**George Walton Bowen b. 1872, married a Lou Sanford.
**Wiley Washington Bowen b. 1875, married Lulu is all I have.

According to information I have about George Washington Bowen, he was born Sept. 22, 1848 (where I'm not sure); George passed away Feb. 25, 1869 in Primrock Texas.
It is also rumored he had a brother JIM whose wife was Laura.
Emily Anna Daniel was born Mar. 26, 1850 in Georgia, she passed away Oct. 17, 1910 in Shamrock Texas. Her parents were Issac Hill Daniel & Keziah ??.
According to Teddy Bowen (jcbowen@flash.net) they found a book of probates of Smtih County showing a Keziah Daniel (deceased) and one the heirs to be George W. & Emily A. Bowen. The petition was submitted May 18, 1876.

Hello Ben,
First, I would like to say you have a wonderful site, I enjoyed looking through all you had very much. My name is Camille Bowen , Bowen being my maiden name. My father was Earl David Bowen, b. 1908 d. 1991, Jackson, Michigan, and his father was Harry Bowen b. 1873 Michigan and died aft 1930. Harry Bowen's father was David R. Bowen b. April 1848 New York, died in Jackson, Michigan.
I was wondering if you had any knowledge of any Bowen's in Jackson, Michigan. I looking at the census of several years I have noticed that many of the Bowen's in Jackson came from Illinois at one time. My father and mother were divorced when I was seven years old and I never saw him again until about 10 years before he died. My mother knows next to nothing about his family and really at her age is not at all interested.
If you know of any Bowen's from Jackson or New York from David I would really appreciate being pointed in the right direction. David had three son's from his first wife who ever she was, Albert abt. 1870 in Jackson, Harry 1873, Horace 1876. He then had another son with a second marriage, Paul Bowen 1889.
Thanks for any help and for taking the time to read my e-mail.

Subject: William H. Bowen was my grandfather
Dear Bowens: My name is Hannah Sullivan Cushman and my mother was the daughter of William Hillary Bowen and Mary Carver Bowen. I have the census sheets on this William Bowen and I am sure we are all related. The Bowens are a fine family. Grampa (as I addressed him) was born in Worcester, Ma. and was an only child. He married my grandmother (A Catholic???) in l905 in Greenville, Ct. My mother was born two years later. Celine was my mother's name.b. 1907; died 1973 She had one sister, Lucille b. 1913; died 1990.
So It is good to have a web site with Bowens. I opt to believe that I inherited my grandfather;s brilliance, dammed good business sense, compassionate, very funny, subtle wit and loved CHILDREN, extremely good to family, loyal and devoted. Yes he was a gem. And he had a livery business in Ct. at the same time that he ran a package store (liquor) and a department (variety) store. All in Greenville, Ct.
My husband and I spend our winters in Florida. We are at our home in CT. from May to October. Nice to be in touch. Look forward to hearing from the Bowens.

Though this does not present a flattering portrait of Willis's Battalion and its involvement in the battle of Fort Pillow, I thought it might be of interest.
Best regards, Andrew ward
Pension file of Allen James Allen James Walker was born in 1845 "in the family of and a slave to Mrs. Sallie Walker near Germantown, Shelby County, Tennessee. My mother, Cleary Walker, belonged to Mrs. Walker also. My father was a white man whom I never knew and my mother never told me who he was," although a comrade later refered to Walker's master as his father. He stood a little under 5'9", with a "yellow" complexion and brown eyes when he was "made up with the original organization under Major Booth. When I enlisted I gave them my name as Allen James and added that I belonged to the widow Walker. They said they wanted my name, not my owner's, and so enrolled me as Allen James, the name my mother gave me. There were only four companies of us then: A, B, C, and D, and we were then called the 7th US Colored Heavy Artillery and had siege guns there at Corinth. In December of 1863 or January, 1864 we came to Memphis to Fort Pickering, bringing our siege guns with us, and shortly after reaching Memphis we were sent to garrison Fort Pillow, Tennessee, about 60 or 70 miles up the river. We left our siege guns at Fort Pickering and had smaller cannon at Fort Pillow. Here, (April 12) in the forepart of 1864 Forrest run in on us. I was captured there. I was not treated like the other prisoners. ...A [Corporal, possibly demoted from orderly sergeant] John [C. Peevey of Co. C, Waul's Texas Legion or Willis's Battalion] took me and made me his servant, made me change my U.S. uniform for Confederate clothes and kept me with them for nearly a year. ...I went with them all over Tennessee, Al;abama, and Mississippi. About December, 1864 or January, 1865, John Peevey sent me with his brother [Private George M.] Dallas [Peevey], who belonged to the same company, to their home in Gonzales, Texas, or rather on their little farm near there and here they made me practically their slave, and I put in a crop that Spring for them. About July 15, 1865, we learned of the surrender, and hearing of some U.S. soldiers coming through there I ran off and got with a wagon train -- I don'ty know from whose command -- and they took me to Columbus, Texas where I was turned over to headquarters and given transportation to Galveston. Here I was sent to New Orleans by ship," and from there "to New York, and falling in with a crowd -- members of many regiments scattered about -- they sent us all round in Virginia and North Carolina, dropping each man off as he reached his command and finally wound me up at Baltimore, Maryland. Here I was given transportation by rail to Cairo, Illinois and from there by boat to Memphis, Tennessee, where I arrived about November 14, 1865, and found my regiment camped on Vance Street and then known as the 11th U.S. Colored Volunteer Infantry commanded by Colonel Turner. Lieutenant NMiles commanded Company D, and the regiment was filled up with strangers, recruits and substitutes. James Murrel, Robert Jones, Sherry Blain and several of the old company boys were still there." After the war he remained in Germantown until 1894, when he moved into Memphis.
Pension file of Allen James Walker.
Hey my name is Billie Myrick
I use to be Billie Bowen before I got married. I was looking for a death certificate of my uncle's and came across your web site. I am so excited to see all the family history. I don't know if this is the same family lineage, but I am sure it has to be. I grew up in Cuero, TX and have some of the most wonderful memories there. The Bowen family is definitely well known there. My grandfather was John D. Bowen. He passed in June of 2000 and was 76 years old I believe. Our part of the Bowen family there in Cuero is probably 40 to 50 of us just in my direct family that still have their roots tied there. Well I just wanted to say what a great web site I thought you had and it sparks some interest in me to find out some more about my heritage and see if we are linked.
My email address is myrickby@hotmail.com if you have any questions or know of any connection.Billie
