Hello all. I place this information on these notepad pages in the hope that it may be useful to those that wander upon my humble effort to piece together my Bowen family line. It seems to be a task that is not easy to do.
Names and information on the notepad pages are not necessarily linked to my Bowen clan / family line, but may be questions that come from other Bowen researchers or from information gathered along the way.
One thing I have learned however is this.....don't believe everything you read and don't jump to conclusions... be a skeptic, double check and verify this ( and all ) information as people do make mistakes.
Still the Search for family roots is an interesting and educational endeavor as tracing the roots and locating information of an ancestors is something like finding an artifact buried in the ground, It is not just a search for facts of birthdates, names of sons and daughters or the location of burial grounds but is indeed the discovery of true American History. Good luck!

My great grandfather was Harry Miller Bowen from Belton Texas, born 1883 in Medina county. His father was Ben, married to a Julia around 1906. We don't know anything more than this (other than Harry used to talk in whispers to his father through the window at night). Sounds foreboding? If you have a tie in would you please let me know. This is the first Bowen sight I have come upon before the 1900s in Texas..

Thank you, Brenda

Native American Bowens
From:
Ronald R. Bowen rbowen1549@charter.net

Hello! Osiyo!

I got this address from an internet page so I have no idea if it is still active or not. Therefore I won't go into a lot of detail, but I am a Bowen myself, born and raised in Fairland, OK, and I am Native American. There was a list of Bowens on the Dawes list and my family members were not among them. My great-grandmother Abigail (Deems) Bowen (married to Elias Bowen) is an original enrollee as were their children born early enough to be included. This includes my grandfather Sanford Bowen. This is all very verifiable and I am in fact a direct descendent of Amatoya Moytoy, b. ~1650. Nancy Ward of the Cherokee is also descended from this Moytoy. As is Dragging Canoe and many others. I am a 'direct' descendent of the Ward that married Nancy after the death of her first husband, Kingfisher. So I'm kind of related to her twice. Anyway, I am a "card-carrying" Cherokee and also part Potawatomie on my mother's side. I guess that is enough for now...usually when I send this type of email out ('into the void') I get a bounce message in short order. If you would like more information regarding my family do not hesitate to ask. If possible, I would like 'my' Bowens added to the list of Bowens on the Dawes Rolls.

Thanks. Wado,

Ron Bowen

I tried for years to tie the Bertie Co. Bowens together as I am interested in John, Benjamin and Nathan. Found some material in N.C. archives, like road records ets. Also will for Benjamin and Nathan who died 1808 and 1810. I have note that Humphey H. Bowen m. Margaret Winniford Bowen, 1854, so this Winnifred must have been dau for John Bowen who m. Winefred Speights 16 Mar., 1801.

Then I have Humphrey m. Frances Ann Leicester 3 Jan 1859. I show Dorcus Bowen m. Thomas Cobb 1803 and Joshua Bowen was bondsman. I also have a note that says Jesse Bowen (1804-1890) grew up on his father's farm in Bertie Co.
He bought 500 A bordered on land of Joseph Outlaw, Hardy Bowen and others. Part of tract Capehart sold to Joshua and Cornelius Bowen by deed 1817. Book CC, Page 807, Jesse m. Margaret Gregory dau of James Gregory and Rachel Boswell. I have Jesse and Margaret names.

Joshua d about 1845. In Benjamin estate sale, buyers were John Bowen ,Thomas Cobb, Hardy Bowen, James Gregory Benjamin Bowen , Sr. Joshua Bowen and others. Benjamin's wife was named Elizabeth. Joshua Bowen Sr., purchased 150 A from William Green in Merry Hill per deed rec May 1, 1807. Jushua Bowen, Jr. b. @ 1802, Jess Bown b March 1804 and Cornelius b @ 1805. (You may have all of this info).
My interest has been trying to tie Bertie Co. Bowen family to Bowen family that migrated to Wilkinso Co., Ga @ 1815. (John, Sparkman, Sessions, Richard and perhaps Isaac. I know that Sessions was in Martin Co., in 1810 census and married Elizabeth Biggs.

Of related interest I also have a Hardin connection through the Hogue line William Hogue 1660( father of John above) had a daughter Mary/Marie who md Marcus /Mark Hardin (a Huguenot family). For some yet unexplained reason Gwenthelyn used as her surname "BOWEN-DAVIS" , I have yet to find the reason for Davis. She also declined to use her husband's surname (sometimes Hogge) Announcing that as a descendent of Welsh royalty she had the right to retain he own surname. All in all sounds like an interesting lady.

Thank you for all you are doing to assist us on our genealogical journeys

My husband's grandmother was Effie Mae Bowen, her father was Tyree Bowen. I believe Tyree lived in Giles County, TN. Although I don't have the date in front of me, he died in the early 1900's with TB. I believe he was born in Alabama. One of my husband's great uncles died in the Baatan Death March in the Philippines in World War II. I wondered what county and the date your Bowens appeared in Tennessee. Lydia

Hello, hope you don't mind if I look your way for a little help. My gr-gr-grfather was Thomas Allen Bowen. According to the 1880 Grimes Co, Tx census, he was from Ala (as were his parents) and his listed age places his yob at about 1848. What faimly he came from and when they came to Texas is still very much a mystery. I was wondering if you ran across his name anywhere in your research. I'm beginning to think our line of Bowens are an orphaned bunch, Hopefully, someone will claim us sooner or later. Thank you for your time.

Hi, I am trying to find some of my mother's family. My Bowen's begin with George Bowen who married Idel Priscilla Hunter in 2/18/1891. My grandmother was Mary Frances Hunter who married William Bowen 11/9/1892. William was born in D.C., have info that his mother came from England, but no names or dates furnished. All of my mother's (and father's) family are deceased now and I did not ask questions early enough in life to have much information to go by. William and Mary Frances apparently lived in Maryland all of their lives. They had six children, all deceased, namely Grace Hunter Bowen (my mother), Mary Frances, Marguerite, Ethel, Violet, and Charles.
Am interest in knowing if any of this sounds at all familiar to you.

Thanks a lot.

Hello,

My name is Richard Rohr. For the past couple of years I have been compiling a cumulative biography of a Civil War regiment, the 100th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. A few minutes ago I was searching for some articles in the Joliet Republican and your Bowen notepad came up "death information :Bowen, Mattie Church:....

This is probably the daughter, and I believe only child of one of the regiments majors who died during the war. I clipped my citation and pasted it below. Thought it might be of interest. I will make the correction to show that the child died. The other Bowen I don't know any more about now, but since he was in the 100th too I thought I'd stick him in.

The preceding notice was extracted from Joliet, Illinois newspaper: the True Democrat, published weekly on Saturday, its successor, the Joliet Republican, took over on June 28, 1862. Hi Ben.
I have just found the Bowen World Website. I am forwarding you my URL. This really looks like a real good project that is going on here. I hope to be able to spend some time here doing some research. All of my family appears to be from the Georgia and Alabama area that I can positively identify with. It is really starting to get really tough to find out any information now. However, I am really starting to find out more on other relatives now. I have my family researched back to my gggreat grandfather Andrew Jackson Bowen Sr., born in 1819 in Georgia, and died April 10, 1878 in Lineville, Alabama. I can not find out who his parents were, but I have faith that sooner or later I will find it out. Keep up the good work, Cory Bowen.   http://www.genealogy.com/genealogy/users/b/o/w/Corwin-L-B

Bio Of William Bowen of Bureau County Illinois

Ben:

I finished talking w/ my dad about your page. I also mentioned to him that you had on there that some of your relatives were from Washington County, NC. Dad said right off that most of the Bowen's from that area were from the city of Plymouth. He also said that he was pretty sure that he was from that clan as well. He also stated that there were a lot of Bowen's in the state of South Carolina. These are direct descendant to the ones in NC. So there is a possibility that we are some what related. I have a second cousin that lives in Washington, NC that I am going to try and get in touch with. Maybe he can shed some light on this subject.

More news to follow.

My name is Susan Bowen Moore. I am looking for my Greatgrand father's father. My greatgrand father's name was Doctor Lemuel Bowen. He wasn't a doctor,I don't think', that was his name. He lived in Greene County ,North Carolina during the 1800 hundreds, He was born around the mid 1790's. I don't know where he was born or where he came from. I 'm noteven sure what his wives names were, I heard he was married 3 times. He had one son named Charles Brinkley Bowen and one named Thomas Matthew Bowen. I also think he had 3 daughters. One named Alice, one named Sara, and the other named Nancy . If you can give me any infomation on this Bowen please let me know. There was an old sayin in this part of the country that all Bowens were kin and we were here around Pitt and Greene Country. One of the court houses here was burned in 1850 and that makes it hard to find someone who lived back then. Please help if you can!

Thank you, Susan Bowen Moore

Hello Ben - nice to meet you too. I found this page by accessing USGenweb and punching in the Bowen name. Yes, that would be my great grandmother - Eliza Anna Bowen. I was not sure of the year or the state she was born in. I just recently found out who my great grandfather and great grandmother were and just recently received my great grandfathers military and pension records from the archives in Washington D.C. My great grandfather was a Union soldier with the 39th Ill. volunteers and was wounded May 16, 1864 at Drury's Bluff, Va. (we just recently visited the sight) he was captured and taken prisoner and held in Andersonville prison for 7 months. From the pension papers we found out who my great grandmother was. Also his death certificate stated his father's name was Henry H. Bowen and his mother's name was Mary Ann Druso. I also am interested in receiving any and all of your information on Eliza Bowen's mother and father. How was she descended from Elizabeth Fabor and Green Bowen? Also in your information you say Green was the son of Joshua Bowen and Margaret Cobb. I like I say have just recently found out who Eliza Anna Green is and have no more information than you have but would love to share what I do have and what my Mother, who is 77 years old , may remember but until we received the infomation from the archives she did not even know who her great grandfather and great grandmother were.

I am going to start on my Mother's side of the family tree. I just recently finished my father's side, taking six years to do so to find out my great grandfather changed my surname from Abney to Abner. My Mother and the rest of my small family of Bowen's would greatly appreciate any help and information you can give on our family.

God Bless you and yours - Ron Abner

Hi Ben:

I am a member of the Bowen Family, however, it seems if this is a different Bowen. I am completely lost in this research, but I did want to add some information about my Bowen family, such as I have.

My father ,Charley Ezra Bowen was an only child as far as I know. His parents, Charley and Anna Harris Bowen. However, I have learned through the years that he had a half brother, whose name was Percy, do not know the last name, maybe Bowen. My homestate is Louisiana, and the small town is Maringouin, I do not know if my parents were born there or not, but that's a start for me if you have any knowledgeable information. What I saw on your website was interesting so add my information to your list as small as it is it may be able to gather more information elsewhere.

My father's name was Charlie Ezra Bowen, born in Maringouin Louisiana (?), to Charley and Anna Harris Bowen, and to my knowledge he was an only child. I have very little information and I am not sure this is the same family, but add this info to your note pad and maybe some results will follow. God Bless

Hi. I'm Johnny Bowen, Jr, son of Johnnie Bowen born near Sulphur Springs in 1923. His father died around 1930. His full name was Levi Newton Samuel Perry Green Berry Bowen, but I doubt that all these names were on his birth certificate. I think he went by Levi. He was born in Wolfe City, Texas. I have never been able to learn anything about my family tree further back than Levi. When I found your web site I was amazed to see Green Bowen listed. Do you think there is a tie-in? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, my son's name is Ben.

 Sincerely, Johnny Bowen

Dear Uncle Ben: do you have any information on the parents of Amanda DUFF b.c. 1850 possibly in Lee or Russell Co. VA. She married David H. Bowen in Lee Co. Va in 1870. Believe she had a child, William Martin DUFF, b. 1864 in Lee Co. prior to her marriage to Bowen. Don't know if she had been married or if the child was illigitimate. She may have had a sister Mary "Laura" Duff who m. Leander Gilbert, and another named Emily. Any

information on the above appreciated. Thanks.

Hello!

The first BOWEN I know of is JOHN BOWEN b: 1790 in ME and he married Sylvia (ROSE) Bowen in 1815. They moved from VT to ME to Michigan and most of my lines seem to be in the Michigan area after that. Sure wish we connected, but probably not that lucky-- anyway, I wanted you to know how much I appreciated your taking the time to share your family genealogy with all of us out here on the web. Have a grea tday!

My father is Welsh in origin, a descendant from the Morgans. I had heard that the name Bowen has its origins in the name Owen. All that I can tell you for sure is in this end of the country I am the only Bowen in the Phone book.

congrats on your site , please feel free to send a line

Ben: None of your Bowen clan matches any of my husband's ancestors but the fact that your Bowens are in Texas may be one of the branches. My husband's grandfather was (William) Russell Bowen, born in Italy, Texas in 1891. He had two brothers and a sister. They lived in Ft. Worth for most of his youth. His father was William Bowen who was the son of a Tenn. settler who came to Texas and first settled in Ft. Bend Co. Texas. There were a lot of children. If this information jives with any of your Bowen branch, would be happy to exchange information.

Sincerely,

Carmen McDaniel Forbes

Good web site. It looks like this is a specific Bowen family. Are you related to Bowen of Scotland?

Is there old family tree information dating back to about 1880 for Bowens in Scotland or Australia?

My grandfather was born in Glasgow Scotland, He was James Bowen. His son Charles Thomas Bowen,(married a Theresa Byrnes in NSW Australia) was my grandfather. All birth details are available if any is nterested. My father died just after I was born. my mother adopted me to Harrison, but we still keep in contact. Thank you.

Alexander Harrison.

Ben:

It was great to hear from you. I have so little information on the Dukes that I appreciate anything. David Duke and Malinda Killingsworth is as far back as I have. Do you have anything on them? I just have where David died in prison in Alabama while serving time for a murder that his brother committed. Do you know anything about this story?

Would love to hear from you again Stacey

Great site Ben,

My father George Edgar and sister Dorthy, were given up for adoption around 1930's by John Felix Bowen to Lou Turbeville and their birth mother Mabel. John died in 60's and have not been able to trace any family history so far. George died in 90's. John Felix had a sister named Ally who was known to have been in San Diego during WWII. John Felix was known to have lived in Houston and Louisiana, and may have lived in the Fort Worth area.

Any help would be appreciated. Keep up the good work.

hi, sonja bowen from australia....just searching for information on my mysterious grandfather, (now dec.). we have looked almost everywhere for any information on his family and ancestry, but to no avail. so if, by any miraculous chance you have heard of a 'harry bowen', possibly 'delruth-bowen' born roughly 1894.....in australia, his mother's name was supposedly alice cazada...or some variation of that. as you can see, we know virtually nothing about him, which has cost our local family much time and frustration!!!! i realize that the chances of you knowing of

him are about a million to one, but who knows???

our email address is couroupi@vic.ozland.com.au

nice talking to you! sonja (nee bowen)
