My great grand father was John Silas Newman, he enlisted in Oct 1861 at Galveston into Capt. B. Timmons Co.
5th Regiment Texas Vol. In July 1862 he was 2" Sergt. Co. D, 1 infantry Batt. Waul's Texas Legion.
In Jan 1863 he was 2nd Lt. Co. D, 1 Infantry Batt. Waul's Legion. He was captured at Vicksburg, Miss. on the 4th day of July 1863 and released on July 9th by John Fry of the 20 Regt. Ohio Vol. After Vicksburg, he was back in Texas as a 2nd Lt. at Camp Sidney and Galveston in Co. E Timmon's Reg't Texas Inf, he remained in this Co. until his discharge.
Just wanted you to have this information, I have copys of his Muster Rolls and the paper that he signed when he was released from Vicksburg in 1863.Thanks Bill Newman
