The Bowens' of Illinois in The War Between the StatesThis information gleaned from the archives of the State of Illinois, lists all the Bowens' from Illinois that served in the war between the states for Illinois.The list shows the Soldiers' name, the Company unit to which he was assaigned and the unit residence. Andrew Bowen, John Bowen and Green Bowen were brothers that served in the 48th infantry company H. included on this page are images of the actual flags that were carried with their companies into battle.The Standards, Regimental flags,national flags and guidons of Illinois Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery regiments were carried by Illinois soldiers during the most famous battles of the Civil War. At the end of the War the majority of the flags were returned to the State and are now in Memorial Halls' Hall of Flags located in the Howlett building in Springfield Illinois. Shown below are three flags that were carried by the 48th Illinois infantry, of which Green Bowen, Andrew Bowen and John Bowen were volunteers. **According to Green Bowen's wife Elizabeth's pension application , Green Bowen also served for the 145th Infantry Company "A" from Vienna.
48th Illinois Infantry National Flag
Begining in February 1862 to be inscribed upon the colors of the regiments flags were the names of the battles in which the regiment "have borne a meritorious part."
Inscribed on the48th's flag: Fort Henry, Fort Donaldson, 48th Reg Ill. Vol, Shiloah, Corinth
This flag is inscribed with the Regimental ID.
The men of the 48th were from Pope, Clay, Hardin, Washington, Marion, Wabash, White and Wayne Counties. The men of Company E were from the State of Kentucky.

Served Illinois Enlisted A Co. 145th Inf Reg. IL Mustered Out at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL on 23 September 1864. The 145th was a "One Hundred Day" Regiment. The One Hundred and Forty-fifth Infantry was mustered into the United States service at Camp Butler, June 9, 1864. Strength, 880. Departed for the field June 12, 1864. Was mustered out at Camp Butler September 23, 1864. Regiment lost during service by disease 40.
