The Union 48th Illinois Infantry
This monument to the Illinois 48th. is located on Grant
Avenue between the Kansas Memorial and Grant Circle at the Vicksburg National
Military Park in Vicksburg Mississippi.
This unit was attached to Col. William W. Sanford's 4th Brigade of Brig.
Gen. William Sooy Smith's 1st Division, Maj. Gen. Cadwallader C. Washburn's
XVI Army Corps (Detachment) and was commanded by Col. Lucien Greathouse.
