The following account of another act of piracy
committed within our waters, was yesterday forwarded to us from the
brig Ant, arrived at Quarantine. It was furnished to Capt. Sabin by the
captain of a
Swedish ship, who a short time previous, fell in with the Mary.
"Brig Mary, Capt. Benjamin Carrico from New Orleans, bound
for St. Jago de Cuba, after being two days out from the Balize, distant
about sixty miles, in a calm, was boarded by an open boat with nine
pirates, armed with guns, pistors, knives and cutlasses, who plundered
the brig of money, plate, merchandise, wearing apparel, liquors,
provisions, & c. & c. supposed to amount about five thousand
dollars
these same
pirates have often been seen in New Orleans, and no doubt will
occasionally visit that city again. It will be well to have this affair
published as soon as possible
they often threatened to set fire
to the brig and destroy every soul on board.
"Dated at Sea the 30th July, 1819.

In Beverly, yesterday afternoon, killed by lightning, Mrs. Deborah
Carrico, age 40. The electric fluid first struck the chimney, at
which it
appears to have separated, and proceeded in opposite directions, as the
roof on
both sides is very much shattered. In its progress down the south
western side, it was attracted by a saw, hanging in the garret, one end
of which
touched the roof. It then proceeded in a perpendicular direction,
perforated a small hole through the chamber floor, and struck the head
of the
deceased, who was standing at a closet door, directly under its
descent. A
wound was inflicted on one side of the head, and marks of its progress
were
visible on the back of the deceased, as well as on her clothes, which
with her hair were much scorched. From this point the fluid
appears to have
scattered in
all directions; for many parts of the building are in ruins - floors
ripped up, plastering stripped off, doors torn from their hinges,
crockery scattered and broken, and looking glasses fractured.
There was
another lady sitting by the window in the same room with the deceased,
who remained wholly uninjured. Another house within a few rods of
this was
greatly shattered by the next discharge of the fluid. A lady and
her
child, who were sitting at the window, were considerably injured,
though not so as
to be thought dangerous. For many years we have not heard such
heavy
thunder, or seen such terrific lightning.

Damage by Lightining. On
Monday last, during the afternoon, evening, and at midnight, we had a
great deal of heavy thunder and vivid lighting, attended with copius
showes of rain, and some hail. In this town, although the thunder was
incessant, and the electric fluid descended in every direction around
us, no material damage was sustained
but we have heard of several disasters in other places. In Beverly, the
lightning struck two dwelling houses, the partiuclars of which are
related in the following communication received from that town:
Beverly, Aug. 6, 1823
M
ELANCHOLY A
CCIDENT.
On
Monday afternoon, during a violent thunderstorm, the house occupied by
Mr. Peter Homans, and the Widow Carrico, was struck with lightning. It
struck upon the north side of the top of the chimney, tearing off about
a dozen bricks
it then descened upon the north and south sides of the chimney, taking
its course on the north side of the house down the roof, between the
boarding and shingling, tearing up the shingles and splitting the
boards in various directions for 5 or 6 feet
it then passed down the roof between the boards and shingles, doing not
much damage until came to the casing of the door, when it again burst
forth from between the boards and clapboards, tearing off some part of
the casing and mouldings, and passed down and went off on the ground.
On the south side of the roof the damage was still greater
it extended more in width, but when about 6 or 8 feet from the chimney,
it came in contact with a saw which was hanging from one of the rafters
in the garret, directly under the course in which it was
proceeding
it then followed the plate down to the garret floor, the lower part of
the saw being not more than 6 or 8 inches from the floor
the frame of the saw was split in various directions, and the heads of
the screws which confined the plate into the frame, were nearly
melted
it then went down through the floor, directly underthe saw, and came
out through the plastering in the south chamber, in which were the
widow Carrico and daughter, and Mrs. Homans, they being all the persons
in the house
Mrs. Carrico was in the act of opening the closet door, standing
directly under the place where the lightning came through, and,
dreadful to relate, received the whole shock upon her head, prostrating
her a lifeless corpse upon the floor; it passed down her right side and
back, tearing and burning her flesh and clothes in a dreadful
manner
her shoe on her right foot was torn and burnt almost to pieces
it then passed down through the floor directly under her right foot
into the kitchen closet and other parts of the room, destroying the
crickery in the closet, tearing the wood work and plastering in various
parts of the room
the ceiling round the fire-place and chimney pieces were very much
shattered and split
it entered the pantry, destroying the plastering, Etc. and proceeded
through the pantry floor into the cellar wall, and from thence out of
the cellar wall, and from thence out of the cellar window, breaking the
glass and demolishing everything with which it came in contact. Fro,
the kitchen also it went into the side and front rooms, doing some
damage. The other two persons in the house were stunned, but not
hurt.
Medical aid was immediately called, but to no purpose
alas, the vital spark had flown, leaving four children, and numerous
connections, to mourn the loss of a tender parent, and a kind friend.
