How to Participate in the Gilpin DNA Study

All GILPINs are encouraged to participate in the GILPIN Family DNA Project.

Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) has been selected to perform the testing. FTDNA is one of the most prominent research firms in this field. FTDNA is a Houston TX based company founded strictly to perform genealogical DNA testing and analysis.

The Y-chromosome DNA samples will be collected from male participants born with the GILPIN surname, or born to a father who carried the GILPIN surname or has reason to believe that a direct line male ancestor was a GILPIN. A male participant may also wish to have the MtDNA test added, however the cost is higher and it may be more desirable to start at the 25 or 37-marker test and add the MtDNA at a later date. Please be aware if a participant decides to start with a 12 or 25-marker test They will need to upgrrade to atleast the 37 marker test. UYou will not have to resubmit DNA since the original test kit is stored by FTDNA and available for additional testing.

Female GILPIN researchers may participate in one of two ways; first we hope you will encourage your fathers, brothers, uncles or cousins of GILPIN descent to submit samples for testing. Second, you may submit your own sample for Mitochondrial – mtDNA testing. Although the mtDNA tests do not provide the genetic finger print found in the male Y-chromosome samples, the mtDNA tests have their own distinct values that are just now being analyzed and discussed.

Each participant is required to send a pedigree chart to the project administrator. These charts are necessary to group the test results by The Most Recent Common Ancestor (TMRCA). The pedigree chart should go back as far as possible and include as many birth and death dates, and maiden names as possible. It is not necessary to include dates for living persons, nor is it necessary to include collateral lines, although, they can help.

The Project Administrator will be the direct contact with Family Tree DNA. To join the GILPIN Family DNA Project either send an email to the Project Administrator: nelda_percival@hotmail.com   or go to http://www.familytreedna.com and input gilpin to the search block, or you can join through the Ydna results page at: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/gilpin/

Each participant will collect their own sample and return the kit along with payment to Family Tree DNA. Each kit will contain two swabs for collecting a few cells from your inside cheek and two collection tubes, simply follow the instructions and complete the FTDNA release form. The release form will allow sharing of your group data results with others that have a match. Payment may be made by check or credit card. Test results will be sent to the Project Administrator as they are received by FTDNA. Each participant will also receive a certificate and a report containing their personal test results.

DUE TO ROOTSWEB POLLICY I CAN NOT LIST PRICES HERE
