Do not know whether the father and mother came or not, nor do I know their names. (Another source said the father and mother died of cholera, apparently in Maryland)

*Jean Henderson - In a handwritten note from Lena Burford Rose says: He was born in Maryland at Gilpin Heights. When he was 12 years old he was going to the mill, and was seized with pain in his heel which continued until he was14 when his leg was amputated. When he was about 13 or 14, he went to Baltimore and was apprenticed to a shoemaker, and worked at the trade until he was 21 years old. At age 21, an Augusta, GA merchant was in Baltimore rounding up his business preparatory to moving to Augusta. He induced young Gilpin to accompany him on the trip. The money was in silver and each carried one half the money on horseback. The merchant paid all expenses. At Augusta young Gilpin set up shoe shop and married Miss Clara Bond in Augusta. He moved to Tennessee, Bedford Co., when W.J. Gilpin, the youngest son was 9 years old.
* John R. Gilpin - Dated Jan. 31, 1978 - State library microfilm earlier revealed to me the record of a deed in Bedford Co., TN, signed and sealed the 9th day of Feb. 1830, where John Gilpin and wife Clary conveyed to their daughter a 14 year old negro slave girl. Co-witnesses to this deed were Thomas C. Bond and James B. Gilpin.

*Ruth Donohugh is the great-great granddaughter of Gartha. Gartha and Simon were very religious and depended on their faith a lot during their hardship. They donated the land upon which the Church of Christ sits today. In fact that is how the location of their "homestead" was found by Ruth, as it comprises one corner of their property. The Gilpin land was in an area outside of Mt. Pleasant called Oak Grove.
*Ruth Donohugh - Message: Carolyn, I enjoyed reading your historical information. Gartha(not Garthey-that's a nickname) was born 7/7/1841 in MS. She was a very well educated woman for her times as. I have her handwritten will and other letters she wrote. I can imagine that her sisters were also well educated until the Civil War disrupted all of their lives. Mt. Pleasant is a lovely town near Dallas. In the basement of the public library is a wonderful historical library featuring a prominent picture of the Burfords. I possess a quilt made by Montie Burford for my great-uncle. We also visited Holly Springs MS in our visits. It is a beautiful southern town. There is also a very good historical library there. I would have liked to spend more time there because I know that there is more Gilpin/Crawford/Hayley history. I have birth and death information for Wm J. Gilpin but cannot find any information about his family. I have Susan Leticia Hayley(his wife) parents names James Henry Hayley and Mary Ann Moring. But I do not have dates for either of them. Do you? There are a lot of Hale/Haley/Hayley names from Virginia and I am working on that, just not full time.

Thank you very much for your response! I had already decided about the nickname of "Garthey" but needed true confirmation. She probably was loving called Garthey because she had to assume the role of "Mama" after the death of their real mother. We also have been to Mt. Pleasant (once we even lived as close as Tyler) & tried in vain to locate the family farm as well as the cemetery. So W. J. m. Susan Leticia HAYLEY--this will be good news to our cousins all over the USA! We had no idea previously. The info I have came from a quote from Traylor RUSSELL of Mt. Pleasant, TX in 1964. My mother, a twin daughter of Gartha's niece, Daisy Cleora NELSON COX, kept it for me. Since I have only been tracing family for less than a year to now, you can see that I have a lot to learn about our families, and also that will tell you I have no info on the Hayleys at all...sorry about that, but should I come across anything in my travels and studies, certainly I'll notify you. I took piano from one BURFORD in Abilene, TX, years ago...she was blind from age 3 with a rare vision disease (a very interesting time in my own life!)as well as her 2 brothers, who were musicians also. In fact one of the brothers was choir director at one of the universities there...I have that bit of history to share although I do not know if they were related at all to the GILPIN/BURFORD line. Pleasant area of Texas as well as other places around Dallas and Mississippi. I do have the entire writing from Traylor RUSSELL if you are interested & happy to share it. Have you any info about Mollie (real name: Mary Athalia) GILPIN other than what I have related to you? She married James Polk (Jim) NELSON and I am one of her many great-grand daughters. One of her girls, Daisy Cleora NELSON, married Caleb William COX, who were my grandparents on my mother's side of the family. Since the ladies are usually hard to trace you may want some of the other siblings of Mollie and Gartha. They are: Rilla who m. someone named TURNER; Richard who fathered 6 children and I don't have his wife's name but have the children's names; Montie who married W. W. BURFORD & their children's name I have as well;and the twins, Will and Sue. Sue m. Abb SMITH who lived at Mt. Vernon, TX. *John Robert Gilpin wrote - William and Montie were married by David Yancy, Sr., at his home, an old Antebellum, two story house built by slave hand sawn lumber, and situated only a short distance from the Center Grove Church Cemetery. They first lived near the home of his father, Elijah Major Burford, where three of their sons were born: Albert Lee, H. Paul, and Joseph.

*Jean Henderson - William Bond Gilpin had studied medicine but wasn't a doctor. However, he was often asked to help with sicknesses when no doctor was available. He was Judge of Motley Co., TX for awhile, and was a good carpenter. My sister Stella said that William had gotten hit on the head which caused his "insanity" problem.
*Willie Mae - When I was nearly a year old, my father was elected Judge and Superintendent of Schools of Motley Co. Of course he needed to move into town. There were no houses available so we lived in the Rock Jail built the early 1880's. I learned to walk on the flagstone floor in that jail house where the 13 steps still lead up to the gallows. No one was ever hanged there. When the people decided to build a courthouse, my father helped locate clay and built a kiln to make brick for it. Also, after his term of County Judge and Supt. of schools, he built many of the best homes and the First Baptist Church. Luckett & Duncan gave him a partnership in the first gin and mill in Matador to oversee the building of the same... In 1907 my parents and a carpenter who worked with my father decided to go to Douglas, AZ, where the wage for carpenters was $6 per day. We left Matador in early September just as school started (to my sorrow, because I liked school). While we were traveling that long strange road, the money panic of 1907 came on. We didn't know it until we arrived in Douglas...(They traveled in two covered wagons and she describes their route.) My father bought a well drill but nobody had any money after the panic to pay for a driller. We leased a place seven miles west of Douglas with a one room house and three wells. Two of them for irrigation. The two pumps were run by Hot Ball engines. The men dug mesquite stumps to burn to make the engines run. We planted onions, radishes, etc. early and they grew nicely. No rain or snow all winter and spring. We had bought some cows and sold milk at $.20 a half gallon and butter at $.40 a pound. Along in April a mormon man and his family came along who had a vision of where to move and bought our crops and cattle, and leased the place. We got ready and started back to Texas. It took us 42 days to go and 38 days to get back to the "foot hill country" of West Texas. In 1908 my father bought a small acreage from Poet Hagins near Duck Creek school, south of Dickens and built a false front store about 24'x40' for a store, post office, and living quarters. My father applied for a post office... The neighbors suggested Gilpin so that name was used and the post office was there about forty years. In the meantime a railroad was built to Spur that came by Gilpin... Spur's big opening day was Nov 12, 1909. Hundreds of people came to see or to buy and trade. Several men made a small fortune that day. They would buy lots as quoted and then sell for a bonus. My folks bought two lots and had a house built where we lived for two or three years. My father was a carpenter but my mother was a natural born farmer. We bought a 20 acre block of land north of Spur in Dockum Valley where there had been a flood in 1893 (before any town was there) that had drowned hundreds of cattle... We lived in the Dockum Valley for several years and had a well with good water that we sold for $1 a barrel or $.25 a tub. Most people knew Spur and most of Dickens Co. have hard or gyppy water.

Notes on William Bond Gilpin and Mary Emma Burford
They came to Dickens County in 1908 to visit their daughter Lee. William bought an acre of land from Poet Hagins and built a false front building. This was their home, a trading post, and later a post office. William was the founder of the town of Gilpin, Texas.

The family moved into the rock jail which was built in the early 1880's. In 1907 the Gilpins, Willie and George, went to Douglas, Cochise Co., Arizona, in a covered wagon, so William could make good money working in the mines. The mines closed due to hard times. The Gilpins returned to Dickens Co. in 1908.
