(His father John, b. 1688, had emigrated to NYC and begun to acquire property in New Windsor in 1718. These Ellisons supposedly go back to Cuthbert Ellison, Sheriff of Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, in 1544.)   • Our original DNA test results led us to the false conclusion that the Lawrence Ellison and Joseph Allison lines were unrelated. This participant was one of the two original testees. He has done very careful research and traced his ancestry back to Lawrence. However, his DNA score is very different from the other seven men who have Orange County and Rockland County, NY Allison/Ellison roots. This seems to be a classic case of a non-paternity event and he has no idea during which generation it occurred. This participant is willing to communicate with other researchers who are interested in the Allison/Ellison line shown in this chart.

    Gilbert appears in the 1850 Census, Town of Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., NY, 20 years old, place of birth indication is unclearly written on census form, but may be NY. He is listed living with Cotton and Elizabeth Chandler and Wm and Margaret Closh.

    While I know of no connection, there may be one between Thomas and Caleb Ellison of Vermont and their families who are also listed nearby in the 1850 Census of Potsdam, NY. Also, my grandfather suspected that a Benjamin Ellison of Vermont might be related because of a Chandler family that is also listed nearby in the 1840 Census of Vermont.

    Alice Heberling Ellison told her son, Charles Donald Ellison that she understood that Gilbert was from Carolina and was an only son - this is not substantiated by the information we know and can document.

    It is reported that Robert Allison, Sr. had a land deed recorded in early 1750's in Granville Co., NC; he apparently had 5 sons by Rachel, his first wife: Thomas, Robert, John, William, and James, then 2 daughters by his second wife Jennet. It appears Robert Allison, Jr. moved to Tennessee within a few years of his father's death in 1796.
